Agent Erin: Updating A Kitchen – So Many Decisions!
by Real Estate Sales Representative Erin McIntyre
We’ve been chatting a lot about our kitchens over the last few months and it’s been really neat to see all the different styles and wishlists of everyone in the office. What would they love to have in their dream kitchen? What are the must-haves?
At our house, we’ve been busy updating our kitchen from the 90’s golden-oak phase into something a little more modern. Here’s what our kitchen used to look like:
While there’s nothing actually wrong with the way the old kitchen looked or functioned, we just wanted to brighten it up and give it a little refresher. And I loooove white kitchens – when the cupboards are higher and longer it gives the feeling that the room is larger and the ceilings are higher! So we made sure to include a nice big pantry cupboard in our renovations.
Pull-out shelves in the pantry are a must-have. What did I ever do before that? Now I can pull the whole thing out and grab items lost deep in the back! These things are life-changing!
I do love nice big kitchen islands and I like the look of them being a different colour than the rest of the cabinets, but I’m not sure I can commit to it. I change my hair colour twice a year… so can I live with an island being a different shade? I also love simplistic backsplashes in a kitchen paired with a great quartz countertop. However with our renos, I made the mistake of picking a “greige” coloured glass tile for my backsplash and I’m not convinced I want to keep it. It looks muddy & green depending on the light of day and I find myself staring at it wondering is it grey? Is it beige? Nope, it’s GREEN! So that might be changing in the near future… we shall see!
So as you can see, renovating a kitchen might come with some great ideas and a few mistakes. Just remember EVERYTHING is changeable, and it takes a little bit of decision-making and hard work. But definitely worth it in the end! Kitchens are one of the best things you can do to raise the value of your home.
