A Look At Current Design Trends
By Agent Ashley Veldkamp – Real Estate Sales Representative
Whether you’re renovating your current home, or building a new one, there comes a time when you get to dive headfirst into the word of design. What finishes are your going to choose? Tiles, paint colours, flooring — it can get a little overwhelming to keep up with current design trends! But take a deep breath! It can actually be fun if you get into the right frame of mind.
As a Realtor, I tend to like design choices that are trendy, but won’t get outdated quickly. (Remember orange wallpaper and avacado green appliances from the 70’s?!) Keep in mind that whatever you choose in your home, it can have an effect on the resale value of the home. If you choose something classic, it never goes out of style! So here are some of my favourite design choices that have stood the test of time.
1. WHITE AND BRIGHT! I have always had a love for clean and crisp slates. Starting with something very neutral allows me to change up the look with just a few minor things like throw pillows or a throw blanket or a really cool or funky piece of art. White cabinetry & walls never go out of style, and in regards to resale they appeal to a large demographic of people because of their neutrality.
2. WOOD, METAL AND STONE or a combination of them. You can warm up a white room by adding natural elements like rustic wood to the design. And elements like metal & stone can add some unique texture and interest to the space. One thing that I love to make a bold statement in my bright and white rooms are eclectic metal light fixtures or a natural wood piece coffee or dining table.
3. WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY? No matter what the trend I always love something that you can add to make you happy, especially if it’s a home you anticipate living in for many years. I mean, you’re the one living there! Maybe it’s some artwork, some colourful piece of furniture, or an heirloom piece that you’ve treasured. For our kids, I fell in love with this vinyl decal from Urban Walls. They love it in their bathroom! Decals are a great way to make a big impact on a kid-friendly room, but can easily be removed as you get the itch to change the look of a space! Check out the Urban Walls website, or even browse Etsy for something that could make an interesting decoration on your walls!
