Agent Kate: My First Home
by Real Estate Sales Representative Kate Broddick
It seems like a lifetime ago, being a first-time homebuyer! But I remember it well.
I was living in Burlington with my “fiance” Ryan, at the time of our first purchase. Ryan currently owned a 3-level townhome off of Appleby Line in Burlington when we first met. Although this “bachelor” pad was our first time living together, nothing beats our first purchase as a couple at 5443 Anthony Place, Burlington.
I’ve always been big fan of bungalows. There is something about the main floor, open concept space that makes me feel “at home.” At the time, I wasn’t a REALTOR®, and so we hired a local expert to assist us in the process. We looked at 10-15 homes that were located in mature neighbourhoods with good highway access before we found “the one.” At that time, Burlington was just beginning to BOOM and still maintained a reasonable price point. We knew with the help of a well-known, trusted REALTOR®, we would find what we were looking for without having to settle.
From the moment I walked into the home, I knew it was “the one.” I remember Ryan was running late getting off work, and I texted him “HURRY UP, I FOUND OUR DREAM HOME!” Our REALTOR® at the time had a pretty good sense of what we were looking for, and for the first time (without asking) came prepared with an offer in hand, knowing that this home would stand above anything else we had seen and we’d need to make a fast decision in order to stay ahead of the competition. And I’m sure glad he did!
Of course, with limited inventory and many hungry buyers, there were 3-4 other showings happening at the same time. I remember feeling anxious, excited and frustrated all at the same time, knowing this house was going to have more than 1 bidder, and one of them was definitely going to be us!
Ryan and I went through the home diligently, and spent about 45 minutes sizing it up, trying to figure out what the perfect offer would be. The home was listed at $429,900 and had been completely renovated from top to bottom – and exactly what I was looking for.
Sure enough, there were 6 offers on that property. Ryan and I, although new buyers, had come prepared with our finances in order and we knew our buying power. We decided to make an offer of $444,000. Why this number? It was the first thing that Ryan blurted out of his mouth, and so I felt the need to trust his gut instinct. And I’m so happy we did. We got the house!
We moved in within 60 days. This would be the house we were married in, and the last house we would stay in Burlington. After this, we made big plans to travel to Brantford so Ryan could open a Chiropractic clinic in Ayr, and I would pursue my real estate career in a city I’d never visited, let alone knew anyone in. We always felt this was the house that we plotted our dreams in. We loved that house and it was hard to say goodbye to it. However, it was the first purchase we made together & it will always hold a special place in our hearts. I still remember the excitement of that first purchase, and nowadays I love working with MY clients as they experience this special transition in their lives!
