Agent Rebecca: My First Home
by Real Estate Sales Representative Rebecca Johnson
A few weeks ago, I was talking to the other agents here at The Kate Broddick Team about the first houses we ever bought for our own families; all the excitement that came with the process of finding what we were looking for as first time homebuyers. We thought it would be neat to start a series of blogs telling you our stories of when we were new to the real estate game!
In 2003, my husband Gerry and I were in the market for our first home. We knew we wanted to be in the GTA, but there was no way we could afford living in Toronto. Sometimes you have to compromise on a few things when you’re looking for your first home – and for us, that meant venturing out into the suburbs a little bit so we could get more “bang for our buck”! This search led us to the newly discovered and growing town of Milton.
At this time, new construction was really just starting to boom in Milton (which is crazy when you see how much has been built in town since then! Milton is huge!) and we thought that a newly built home would be perfect for us. We purchased a Mattamy corner townhouse with a wrap around porch. I was so excited! It had 3 bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and 1615 square feet of living space for $220,000. We were in love! What really makes my jaw drop now is that comparables on this same home today are around $650,000 in Milton – so you can see how getting into the real estate market as soon as you can will benefit you in the long run!
It was in this home that Gerry & I started our family. We brought our newborn daughter into this house and created many wonderful memories here watching her (and the neighbourhood around us) grow. Christmases, birthdays, and New Years we spent all warm and cozy in our little townhome. We even planted the evergreen tree on that corner, which has since grown so much taller than when we started! But, as our daughter grew and family situations started to change and we decided to start looking for a larger detached home to spread out into and enjoy. That’s when a unique opportunity came our way.
In 2007 a friend of mine who was a Realtor in town came to me with an idea. She had been approached by HGTV to be part of a show called “The Great Home Giveaway” and needed to provide a couple of homes in the Milton area for contestants to view. Once viewed, they were to place a guess bid. The closest bid to the sticker price (which was unknown) won the house! You betcha one of the contestants guessed the correct amount and our home was the Grand Prize! That’s when it became a reality that we needed to start packing and moving on to our next adventure.
Not everyone has quite the story that I have about their first home but it was fun! Like your first love, you’ll always fondly remember your first home buying experience. If you’re in the market for your first home, give me a call! I’d love to help you find the place you’ll remember years from now full of memories and stories to share.
