Our Favorite Design Trends

Over the last few weeks #TeamKate has been talking about design trends that we love, and now it’s my turn! I have so many ideas and if you’re anything like me, you drool over Pinterest nightly with big ideas on what we can do to our homes. And even though it’s fun to daydream, if you’re serious about redecorating your home, it can be overwhelming with all the decor trends that seem to change so quickly! So here are a few simple things that I love that are super-easy to change without making a huge financial commitment.
This is a BIG DEAL in my home. I need lamps, dimmers, candles anything to avoid a bright “diner” like atmosphere. I drive everyone crazy with my constant struggle of perfect lighting. Not only does a dim light make a room much more cozier but there are so many stylish lamps that can tie a room altogether. And nowadays, you can even choose the tone of the lightbulbs for your home — everything from a warm-white to a cooler “daylight” tone. With LED bulbs coming down in price too, you can make an energy-efficient change in your home.
Throws & Pillows
I love a couch with a million pillows. It looks so inviting and just screams comfort!!! You can choose so many different designs and colours to brighten up a room. Try mixing up patterns (stripes, solids, florals, etc.), textures (like cotton, knitted wool, even fur!) and sizes. This adds a lot of interest to your sofa. And then add in a cozy throw blanket in a complimentary colour. There is nothing better after a long day than putting your feet up and cuddling up with a cozy blanket on the couch!
Add a pop of colour!
If you’re nervous about going totally bold with colour on your walls or large pieces of furniture, try adding some bright accessories in your favorite colours! Neutral wall colours like white, beige or grey are less overwhelming, and gives you the opportunity to go crazy with colour in your artwork, pillows and throw rugs. Right now my favourite is navy blue with flecks of gold – it’s so pretty and simple, but when I want to change things up to something a little different, it will be easy to change out just the accessories! Feeling a little more courageous? Try adding an accent wall in a bold hue – it adds interest to a room without overpowering an entire space.
I love walking into a house that has all of these elements. Nothing makes a place feel more like “home” to me than calm lighting, a cozy couch and a dash of colour! If you’re just getting started, try creating a Pinterest board of things you find online that are appealing — before you know it, you’ll have figured out what style trends make YOU feel at home too!
