My Experience Leasing A Home
by Real Estate Sales Representative Lisa Sly
Not everyone is ready to buy a house or even wants to buy a house. Some of you may be moving from a different city, province or country and just want an opportunity to get to know your new location before committing to buying a house. Whatever the reason may be, I wanted to share with you what my leasing experience was like when my family and I relocated to Houston, Texas.
My family and I relocated for Adam’s work. Initially, the thought of trying to find a place to live in another country was extremely stressful and overwhelming. I learned a few things that really made the process of leasing a home a little easier.
Did you know that you can actually use a Realtor® to find a great house to lease? That is exactly what we did and it was the best thing we could have ever done. We were able to narrow our search down by working with our Realtor® to ensure we were looking at leases within our budget, in a good location that was within close proximity to Adam’s work and that the lease met all our needs and wants. Having young children, this was a huge benefit since we didn’t have to necessarily scour classified ads or listing sites to find our perfect place. Our Realtor® also worked with us to view the properties from Canada and Facetime with us so we were able to do a walkthrough with them. Given the distance, this was an added bonus and something that could have only been done using a Realtor®.
As for Adam and I, working with a Realtor® really helped with finding many great leasing opportunities that we would not have come across if we were looking on our own. We ended up finding a beautiful spacious two storey home with five bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a spectacular backyard and in a gorgeous gated community that was only a ten minute drive from Adam’s work. This was a bonus because that meant that Adam could come home for work most days for lunch.
As you can see, the backyard is what sealed the deal for us. We had a grapefruit and peach tree that we could pick fresh fruit from. We were able to go for daily paddles and Adam could kayak on the pond in our backyard. As an added bonus, there were ducks that lived on the pond! Our children were able to feed them from the backyard every single day – weather permitting of course! Most mornings we started our day off either going for a walk or run in our beautiful community and we ended our days admiring the beautiful sunsets with a glass of wine. Our time in Texas was special to us and what made our experience even more enjoyable is that we didn’t have any of the stress that comes with owning a house.
I remember at one point the fridge was not working properly. We simply called the landlords and within days they had a new one delivered. Adam and I didn’t have to worry about trying to get the fridge repaired or be bothered with purchasing a new one. It was as simple as a phone call and that was it! Being past home owners, this was a nice relief for us. No repairs, no renovations and no maintenance resulted in no stress!
If you’re on the fence about buying, not sure about if it is the right time for you or are new to the area I would suggest leasing and contacting a Realtor® to help you with the process to make it as stress free as possible for you!
