Agent Nicole: My First Home
by Real Estate Sales Representative Nicole Slade
I remember when my husband and I began to think about the idea of home ownership and if it was currently an attainable goal at that point in our lives. We were fairly young at the time but had been together for several years already and had recently moved up to the ‘Big Nickel’ otherwise known as Sudbury, Ontario!
The first thing we did was make an appointment at the bank! We found out what we could afford, and the details of what the mortgage would entail; rates, payment structure and all that other good stuff! We didn’t want to shop around for houses that we ultimately wouldn’t be able to afford – and who wants to fall in love with a house just to be disappointed when you find out it’s not in the budget?!
Once we knew what our price range was, the next step was to reach out to a well known and respected REALTOR, who could help us navigate the home buying process. In the end we purchased a foreclosed 3 bedroom 1 bathroom home that sat on 2 acres – that had multiple offers and needed a lot of work! But it was a great way to get a home with better bones for a LOT less money.
We closed in just a little bit over 2 weeks and that’s when the work began! We painted the entire home, refinished the kitchen cabinetry and made the house our very first home! This house meant a lot to both Derek and I. With all the sweat equity we put into fixing it up, it also was where we went from being kids to learning how to be an adult. It was where we brought home our fur babies, Charles and Barkley, and it’s where after 6 years Derek proposed to me while we were cozied up in our living room during those really LONG Sudbury winters!\
We only lived in the home for 18 months before we decided to sell and move back home to the Brantford area. In those short few months, we made over $45,000 and it paved the way to my love of real estate and home renovations and design! We knew from the get go this wouldn’t be our forever home, but it sure did make for some great memories!
