Should you paint your home for the next owners?

If you’re getting ready to list your home, you’ve probably been wondering what you can do to freshen it up so it will sell quickly for top dollar. And the answer is: PAINT! Yep paint! It’s so simple!
Sometimes when we go into a home, it’s easy for certain buyers to get distracted by clutter, or dirty marked up walls — it gives the impression that the owners haven’t cared for the home. Whereas, everyone loves to walk into a home with freshly painted walls with no marks and bright clean trim. This seriously makes your home so much more appealing to so many potential buyers. And best of all, it makes your home smell clean & new!
Now with that said, I’m not suggesting you go paint your kitchen canary yellow and the living room neon green. Stick to neutrals! That appeals to the widest group of buyers and it makes it easy for them to imagine moving their belongings in to the space. You don’t have to paint the whole house but the main living space and kitchen will make a big difference. If the kids’ rooms are bright pink and orange, don’t worry so much about it — they are secondary rooms and do not affect the sale as much as the primary rooms would. I would only recommend making a change in those rooms if the colours are making the room feel smaller or if the walls are particularly banged up.
I recently just painted my kitchen & living area with a warm grey colour (“Greige” as they call it!). I was torn between the colours “Balboa Mist” and “Collingwood” by Benjamin Moore. Both were warm, neutral, and helped the rooms feel clean and modern. I ended up with Collingwood and LOVE it. I would suggest it for the perfect neutral!!
It can be an inexpensive way to update your home without having to do a major renovation. And it will attract more buyers because they don’t feel like they’re going to have to tackle re-painting the home after they move in. Obviously to do it yourself saves some money but if your paint skills are a bit shakey then splurge and hire a professional. We want to put your home’s best foot forward so we can get that SOLD sign up sooner than later!
